Retirement Villages Association Conference 2017

Patrick Smith, Henley on Broadwater Retirement Village, Southport, Queensland

Patrick Smith

Patrick commenced his professional career as a community-based pharmacist. Identifying the growth of home video in the early 80’s, he went on to become Australia’s largest Blockbuster franchisee.

In 2011, he established Freedom Aged Care with Paul Browne, delivering private aged care services to residents in small ILU units. He sold his equity in Freedom in 2014 and the business was subsequently acquired in 2016 by AVEO, Australia’s largest retirement village operator to underpin their evolution to a ‘ continuum of care’ provider.

Drawn by its prime CBD location with commanding Broadwater and ocean views, in 2015 Patrick purchased the receiver-controlled and largely empty Grande Pacific, a 25 story retirement village on the Gold Coast with a vision to encapsulate a broad suite of service offerings including full care services to make retirement and ageing a positive life experience.

The Henley on Broadwater now supports a full tower of brand ambassadors that describe their home as a Lifestyle Resort, despite the average entry age of 82. Patrick will share his vision of what constitutes a great life in retirement and how, as village operators, we can support a vibrant life that includes care support.
